Typically, it takes two to four weeks to inspect a property, provide a quote and schedule in the move, depending on where you are moving to.

During the summer school holidays, we advise customers to provide as much notice as possible to ensure your move date is available.

When can we expect removalists to arrive?

We contact our customers at least one working day before the scheduled moving day to advise of a time. This means you will know exactly when your belongings will be ‘lifted’ from the property, so you can be ready. You’ll already know approximately when we are due (morning or afternoon for example) however, we like to be as accurate as we can which is why we confirm the day prior, meaning less likelihood of any changes.

Will we get a courtesy phone call prior to removal?

As part of our commitment to provide excellent customer service, we provide a courtesy call to our customers prior to the removal taking place.

Do you move pool tables and pianos?

Professional piano removals

Our team of professional removalists will handle your prized instrument with care from the moment it leaves your home until it arrives at your new abode.

Whether it’s an upright or grand piano, we have specialist equipment and packing materials to transport your belongings safely.

Pool table removals

Owners of pool tables will know just how heavy they are, weighing anywhere up to 250kg. Pool tables can also be very fragile due to their slate beds, so they are not items you’d want to be moving without professional equipment or experience.

Our removalists have experience and the specialist equipment needed to move your pool table without causing damage.

Some larger pool tables may need to be dismantled for safe transport, particularly if the move requires stairs.

Will you move pot plants?

In most cases, we are able to move pot plants, with the exception of moves to West Australia and Tasmania, where border control restrictions need to be adhered to.

Greater Northern Removals & Storage can provide you with advice on packing depending on your consignment.

Generally, we advise customers to pack items upright, even plates and bowls, to provide greater protection whilst in transit.

Do I need to prepare my appliances for transport?

The make and model of your white goods will determine the preparation. Generally, fridges should be turned off 24 hours prior to the move.
Some washing machines may require a specialist to uninstall or disconnect.

Do I have to empty my chest of drawers?

All furniture should travel empty meaning you will have to empty those drawers before the big move.

Risk and reliability

What are the risks of choosing the wrong removalist?

Choosing the wrong removalist can expose customers to significant risks, particularly for long-distance and interstate moves where logistics are more complex. Common risks include:

  • Damage to furniture and personal belongings
  • Delayed or missed delivery dates
  • Hidden fees or unexpected additional charges
  • Limited insurance or unclear liability
  • Poor communication during transit

These risks can lead to stress, additional costs, and disruption. Using an experienced removalist with established interstate processes helps reduce the likelihood of these issues.

What can go wrong during an interstate move if it’s poorly managed?

Interstate moves require careful coordination. When a move is poorly managed, problems can occur throughout the transport and delivery process, including:

  • Furniture damage due to improper packing or securing
  • Delivery delays caused by scheduling or route planning issues
  • Additional handling or reloading costs
  • Limited visibility or communication during transit

Because interstate moves from North Queensland involve longer distances and fewer transport windows, experience and planning are critical to reducing disruption.

Are removal companies responsible for damage during a move?

Responsibility for damage during a move depends on the terms of service, handling processes, and any insurance or transit cover arranged. Professional removalists typically explain coverage options before a move and outline responsibilities in their agreements. Damage risks can increase if items are improperly packed, handled, or secured during transit. Customers should clarify insurance options, packing responsibilities, and claims processes before confirming a booking. Using an experienced removalist with structured packing and handling procedures helps reduce the likelihood of damage during transport.

What insurance should a professional removalist provide?

A professional removalist should hold appropriate insurance, including public liability and workers’ compensation. Transit or goods-in-transit cover is typically discussed with customers prior to a move and may vary depending on service type and distance. Insurance helps protect against unforeseen incidents during loading, transport, and unloading. Customers should always confirm what insurance is included, what additional cover is available, and how claims are handled. Clear communication around insurance is particularly important for interstate and long-distance relocations.

Cost and value

What does a failed move really cost beyond the quoted price?

The true cost of a failed move often extends far beyond the original quote. Additional costs may include:

  • Replacement or repair of damaged items
  • Temporary accommodation or storage fees
  • Lost work time or missed commitments
  • Rebooking or emergency removal services
  • Stress and disruption during settlement or handover periods

For interstate relocations, recovery costs can escalate quickly. Selecting an experienced removalist helps minimise these hidden costs.

Is the cheapest removalist usually the most expensive option?

A low upfront quote does not always represent the lowest overall cost. Cheaper removal services may involve trade-offs that increase risk, such as:

  • Reduced service inclusions or limited packing support
  • Inexperienced crews or subcontracted labour
  • Minimal insurance or unclear coverage
  • Higher likelihood of delays or damage

While price matters, experience, reliability, and transparency often determine the true cost of a move.

How much does damage or delay cost during an interstate move?

Damage or delays during an interstate move can result in costs well beyond direct repair or replacement. These impacts may include:

  • Extended storage or rescheduled delivery fees
  • Temporary housing or accommodation expenses
  • Missed work or delayed employment start dates
  • Disruption to family or personal arrangements

Because interstate moves involve longer transit times, resolving issues can be more complex and costly.

What happens if a removalist cancels or misses your move date?

If a removalist cancels or misses a scheduled move date, customers may face immediate logistical challenges, including:

  • Urgent rebooking at short notice
  • Temporary accommodation or storage requirements
  • Increased costs during peak periods
  • Stress caused by disrupted timelines

Reliable removalists reduce this risk through planning, capacity management, and clear communication.

Regional moving challenges

Why are interstate moves from North Queensland more complex than metro moves?

Interstate moves from North Queensland involve logistical challenges not typically faced in metropolitan relocations, such as:

  • Longer transport distances and transit times
  • Fewer transport routes and delivery windows
  • Weather and seasonal impacts
  • Limited backloading opportunities

These factors make experience and route knowledge essential when planning long-distance moves.

What challenges are unique to moving from Cairns or Townsville interstate?

Moves from Cairns or Townsville interstate can present challenges including:

  • Long-haul transport requirements
  • Seasonal weather affecting scheduling
  • Distance-related cost considerations
  • Fewer alternative transport options

Removalists experienced in North Queensland relocations are better equipped to manage these challenges.

How does distance and remoteness affect interstate removals pricing and timing?

Distance and remoteness influence both pricing and delivery timelines due to factors such as:

  • Fuel usage and driver scheduling
  • Overnight or multi-day transport requirements
  • Consolidated or dedicated load planning
  • Limited delivery windows at destination

An experienced interstate removalist can explain how these factors affect cost and timing.

What should you check when moving long-distance from regional Queensland?

When planning a long-distance move from regional Queensland, customers should check:

  • The removalist’s interstate experience
  • Insurance and transit cover options
  • Estimated delivery timeframes
  • Packing and handling processes
  • Communication during transit

Clear expectations and experienced handling reduce the risk of delays or damage.

How do you know if a removalist is experienced with long-distance moves?

Experience in long-distance moves is demonstrated through established interstate routes, years of operation, customer reviews, and transparent explanations of logistics processes. Removalists who regularly handle interstate relocations are better prepared for distance-related challenges. Reviewing case examples and customer feedback can provide insight into a company’s experience.

Trust and experience

What should you look for in a reputable interstate removalist?

What should you look for in a reputable interstate removalist?

A reputable interstate removalist should have proven experience, clear service terms, appropriate insurance, and a strong customer review history. They should communicate clearly about timelines, pricing, and responsibilities. Transparency and consistency are key indicators of reliability, especially for long-distance relocations.

How important are reviews and experience when choosing a removalist?

Reviews and experience provide insight into a removalist’s reliability, professionalism, and ability to manage complex moves. Long-standing companies with consistent feedback are often better equipped to handle interstate and regional relocations. Customers should review recent feedback and assess their experience alongside service offerings and communication quality.
