Whether moving to Far North Queensland has long been on your wish list or your boss has advised that your next post is in the Cape, moving to the tropics can be an eye-opener. Particularly if you’ve lived in a city for most of your life.

While Cairns is a populated regional city in Far North Queensland, it may be that your move takes you even further north. Cape York, the Torres Strait Islands or across the Savannah or Gulf. These moves are more challenging and require a level of sophistication that some of your favourite cities don’t need.

But don’t fret. We’ve written this blog to help you plan your move and put you at ease, so you can enjoy everything life in regional and remote Queensland has to offer.

Preparing for the climate

FNQ can get a bad rap for its triple threat of heat, moisture and… mould. Depending on where you’re moving from, it may be the first time you’ve experienced mould. However, it is completely manageable. And while humidity may affect furniture, mattresses and leather goods, there are steps you can take to protect them.

When packing in humid conditions, it’s essential to use moisture-absorbing packs to protect your items. Avoid placing plastic wrap directly against wood or leather, as it traps moisture and can cause damage. Additionally, prioritise sturdy, sealed cartons and consider professional wrapping for more vulnerable items to ensure their safety.

When it comes to moving, don’t underestimate the power of pest-proof packaging—because who wants a surprise visit from a family of cockroaches? Insects have a strange affinity for cardboard, so let’s not roll out the red carpet for them!

Using professional packing services not only provides the muscle and expertise you need but also offers pest-resistant materials, ensuring your boxes remain more of a fortress than a welcome mat. And if you’re relocating near bushland or islands, remember that a clean move is crucial; you don’t want to accidentally turn your boxes into the latest party spot for bugs, right?

So, pack smart, seal tight, and keep the critters at bay!

Timing your move

Unlike southern Australian cities where you enjoy four seasons (sometimes in one day – looking at you, Melbourne!) there is only a wet and a dry season in Far North Queensland. And the wet season can present some logistical challenges.

That said, if you pick the right removalist to help you, it doesn’t really make much of a difference. But here are some points you should be aware of.

The wet season runs roughly from November to April, and it’s during this time that there is potential for flooded roads, shipping delays, and longer travel times.

Surprisingly, a lot of people move in and out of FNQ during the summer (wet season) school holidays, and that often means December and January are busy.

This is why it is important to book early with a reputable removalist who knows the routes, weather, has specialist trucks and alternative modes of transport if necessary.

A pro-tip. Pack essential items separately, just in case of transport delays.

From Highways to dirt tracks

If you do attempt to move yourself, be aware that not all roads are sealed. Dirt and gravel make up a significant part of the roads if you’re driving to the tip. While your 4×4 may be able to take these in its stride, spare a thought for your poor furniture and finest crockery being bounced around in the trailer.

That being said, it really depends on where you are heading to but, the combination of unsealed roads and wet weather can make some roads impassable. So, local knowledge matters.

Reaching the far corners of Australia

Moving furniture to a remote island, like those in the Torres Strait, often feels like planning a small expedition. It typically involves a well-orchestrated ballet of trucks, ships, and the occasional small plane. That’s where our removalist shines by coordinating all the logistics to ensure that your belongings don’t take a wrong turn.

Just a heads-up, weight limits can apply to air freight. So, before you decide to pack that 1,000-pound coffee table, give us a call to discuss what’s feasible. After all, nobody wants their beloved furniture taking an unscheduled swim!

Why local experience matters

Living in a tropical paradise is liberating, but often the journey of getting there, with everything intact, can be a challenge. However, with a bit of extra planning and a reputable removalist by your side, your move to the Far North can be a breeze.
