40 years is a long time in any industry. In the removals business, it’s a lifetime. When Greater Northern Removals first started moving families and businesses across Far North Queensland, there was no internet, no online reviews, no GPS and a lot less back pain.
Today, the industry is far more advanced than it ever was, but the responsibility of moving someone’s entire possessions safely hasn’t changed. Neither has our commitment to getting it right. Having hauled thousands, possibly millions, of boxes over the last four decades, we’ve learned a few things along the way.

Trust is everything
Entrusting complete strangers with moving your and your family’s treasured belongings requires confidence, and in the removals industry, word of mouth goes a long way toward getting your foot in the door. Long before Google Reviews existed, people would ask family and friends for recommendations, and over time we won a lot of people over with our dedication to service.
However, it is a double-edged sword. Bad service travels fast. One bad move, one broken heirloom, one missed booking, one crew that didn’t show up, and before you know it, everyone in Far North Queensland knows about it. So we’ve always made it our mission to do our very best to reduce the chances of these happening.
And with that comes the trust that we will always do the right thing.
The families who moved with us decades ago now call us to move their adult children. Government departments who trusted us with their first remote relocation still pick up the phone when the next one comes around. That kind of loyalty is earned, one careful move at a time.
Every move is personal
When thinking back over 40 years, one philosophy that has always stood out is “caring creates success”. On the outside, it looks like boxes and furniture. On the inside, it’s someone’s whole world.
We’ve moved newlyweds into their first home together and helped families clear a loved one’s belongings after a passing. We’ve moved people chasing new opportunities and those starting over after heartbreak.
Every move in some way or other is personal. This is why our team doesn’t just show up and start carrying things. We’ve seen first-hand what it means to a family when something irreplaceable is damaged or lost. So, small things like ensuring we’ve got the right team to move heavy, bulky items, or providing durable protective wrapping, go a long way to ensure treasured possessions arrive in the same condition they left.
Experience prevents problems
When it comes to choosing a removal company, one common pitfall is going for the cheapest quote without checking the details. Hidden fees, exclusions, underinsured loads, and inexperienced crews can quickly turn a great deal into a costly headache. To help you avoid these pitfalls, we draw on over 40 years of experience in the removal industry.
With over 40 years of experience, our team has seen it all and knows how to tackle challenges thrown our way. Whether it’s manoeuvring through tight staircases, gently handling heritage furniture, navigating flood-prone access roads, coordinating barge schedules to reach remote island communities, or working in warm 40-degree heat.
We’ve also experienced some weird and wonderful moves, from moving 63,000 cartons by air for the Queensland Census and the Commonwealth Games burner, to celebrities such as Marlon Brando and author Thea Astley, we’ve seen it all.
Each of these experiences, whether routine or extraordinary, reinforces our commitment to managing every move with care and professionalism. Regardless of whether we’re managing a consignment from one of Queensland’s most expensive properties or a regular family home, our skilled removalists are here not just to carry your belongings but to ensure everything goes smoothly.

The industry has changed for the better
When this business started, it’s fair to say safety standards in the removals industry looked very different. Manual handling techniques, equipment standards, worker training, and insurance obligations have all evolved, thankfully, for the better. Many of the standards that are now essential simply didn’t exist when Greater Northern Removals was founded.
This is why cheap removalists so often cut corners, because compliance costs money. Proper training costs money. Insured, maintained trucks cost money. But these costs aren’t optional in today’s world; they’re simply the baseline of a professional operation. They’ve always been non-negotiable for us.
Longevity comes from adapting (not standing still)
While nostalgia or rose-tinted glasses will have us all believe the past was better, businesses that survive four decades don’t do it by staying the same.
We’ve had our fair share of challenges along the way, but ultimately, we have adapted and often for the better. From the pilot strikes in the late 1989 and 1990s, where the region was losing $1m a day in tourism, to the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, where people were forced to move out of their homes under financial pressure; the way we operate and do business has needed to evolve to survive.
But it’s not just the industry that has changed. The way customers book, communicate, and track their moves has transformed completely. Digital job management, real-time communication, and streamlined logistics systems now allow us to coordinate complex relocations to remote Far North Queensland communities or far-flung towns interstate in ways that simply weren’t possible before.
Customers also want transparency, communication, and accountability. They want to know their move is in safe hands. Adapting to meet those expectations isn’t just good business; it’s how you honour the trust people place in you.
Still here, still moving.
40 years on, Greater Northern Removals is still here because we’ve never forgotten what this business is about. Caring for people and respecting the trust they place in us.
